The MS Society and many volunteers have helped and supported
hundreds of people affected by the illness on the Isle of Wight.
The
Multiple Sclerosis Society was first formed in London in 1953. In 1969
the
Isle of Wight Branch had its inaugural meeting. In the 40 years
since then the branch has moved from strength to strength, providing many
services for
people affected by the illness.
The
Charity is self funding and receives no financial assistance from NHS
or the Isle of Wight
Council. The society depends on fundraising, donations and
monies left in legacies. It is hoped that the Dinner and Charity Auction
in Novembrt will boost the
funds substantially in order to continue the current services provided
and hopefully
expand new and innovative services.
In
2002 the societys funds were boosted considerably with a large donation
This large
sum of money enabling us to purchase the Mini bus which has proved to
be such an asset to
the branch.
In
2005 an MS Society charity shop was opened in Shanklin. This year we hope
to open a larger shop
that will have the benefit of a cafe/tea room attached. It should help
swell the funds as well as allowing
many people diagnosed with the condition another scorce of information.
